Cathedral should follow a humbler path, not spend millions on itself

-

THE Cathedral in Tuam has proposed a multi-million euro refurbishment, to include a complete revamp of the altar and sanctuary area.

It is stated that one of the reasons the altar needs to be torn apart is because “it does not fit in with the neo-Gothic design of the Cathedral”.

All in the name of present worshippers.

I just simply ask, is all this grandiosity really needed to bring us closer to God in prayer?

Did the humble Jesus not teach us the best form of prayer is to go into a quiet room, shut the door, and open your heart and thoughts to Him? Jesus took to the desert to pray, St Patrick spent 40 days and nights on Croagh Patrick to be alone with God and away from distraction.

Pope Francis has begun to give the example of living a more humble, simple life for us all to follow.

Is this not the road we should follow? Catherine Corless Tuam, Co Galway
