Hawking’s bias against God and the afterlife
A BRIEF History of Godlessness…
Might I ask why the Irish Independent’s review of Stephen Hawking’s ‘Brief Answers to the Big Questions’ in an article called ‘Hawking: There is no God or Afterlife’ (October 16) decided to focus only on the ‘God Question’?
One reason might be it’s indicative of an antitheistic bias which locates superior intelligence only in those who are ‘godless’. It is certainly untrue; belief has nothing at all to do with one’s capacity for understanding.
Hawking is the latest to represent this bias. Which is remarkable since he also held that a Grand Unified Theory would allow us “to know the mind of God”.
He failed in this venture, so if he has anything of moral value to which he can offer us instruction, it is his life’s work disproves the adage of trusting your gut. Malachi Maguire Clane, Co Kildare
