Mairead Martin:
KANTURK’S Mairead Martin clinched her second top-10 of the season to help the University of Lousiville claim a one-stroke victory at the Alexa Stirling Women’s Intercollegiate Invitational on Sunday.
It was Louisville’s first team victory since they took home the title at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic last March.
“It was a great team win!” said head coach Courtney Trimble after her team’s narrow win over an Auburn side featuring Forrest Little’s Julie McCarthy at Atlanta Athletic Club.
Martin, who will be 19 on Sunday, finished tied for seventh on six-over after rounds of 73, 74 and 75
McCarthy tied for fifth in the individual standings on five-over after rounds of 75, 74 and 72.
“This is the kind of golf I really know that they’re capable of playing and expect them to play,” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said.
“We had to count five doubles and two triples in the three days – and to have an opportunity to win the tournament with those kind of mistakes is significant. It just shows them how good they really can be.”
