Dispute: Ambulance staff threaten overtime ban in row over union subscriptions

- Laura Lynott

A ROW has erupted in the ambulance service after staff claims that union subscriptions have been blocked.

Some staff are threatening that on Wednesday next they will refuse to work overtime across the country unless the deadlock is resolved.

The disagreement saw up to 100 paramedics and emergency medical technicians hold a protest outside Dr Steevens’ Hospital in Dublin. Some ambulance staff claim National Ambulance Service (NAS)

managers took the decision to sever their subscription payments to a union – the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association – last month.

A HSE spokeswoman said: “The HSE is satisfied that ambulance personnel are already adequately represented through agreed industrial relations processes that exist in the health sector. NAS has an ongoing engagement with Siptu, which is the recognised trade union for front-line NAS staff.”
