Cave hero: Clare diver stars as himself in movie about rescue of Thai soccer team
THE past four months have been a whirlwind for electrician and Thai cave rescue hero Jim Warny.
The humble Ennis, Co Clare, man has now added movie star to his list of achievements as he shot scenes in Shannon Airport for the upcoming Thai film ‘The Cave’. The film will be the first to tell the story of the rescue of 12 Thai boys and their coach from the Tham Luang Nang Non cave.
Mr Warny, a 35-year old caver, will play himself.
He was central to the rescue that gripped the world in July and the Belgian native carried out the boys’ coach from the cave in the final rescue.
At the arrivals hall at Shannon Airport, Mr Warny and his partner, Asia Mania, recreated the scene from July 13 last when they emerged from the baggage hall to be greeted by a scrum of journalists and cameramen, while Mr Warny was given a hero’s welcome.
He told reporters yesterday: “People are going to look at this and they will say, ‘It’s going to the movies now and it’s going to make you bucks’ and that’s not the way I look at it.
“It’s because there’s such a story to be told, and nearly 70pc of it hasn’t been told yet because it was all experienced by us and all the rest of the crew.”
Mr Warny also said he would like to meet with the rescued boys when he gets to Thailand.
“I would like to meet the boys. I know the British guys met them there last week, and that’s going to be a very special moment.
“I am sure there’s a special bond we have and it would be nice to see them,” he said.
