JET BLASTS HIS LEGER RIVALS

- Michael Fortune

HAVING just the 11th race of his career, Blastoff Jet produced a replica of his semi-final shock when he scored a decisive victory in the final of the Barking Buzz Irish St Leger at Limerick Stadium on Saturday.

Owned, bred and trained by Philip Buckley, Blastoff Jet easily won the battle to the first bend and was already being cheered home as he went five lengths clear along the back straight.

Lenson Blinder made a big move from the halfway mark, but was still two lengths adrift of the winner at the line in a time of 29.65.

Blastoff Jet was slightly lame emerging from his kennel yesterday morning, but Buckley is hopeful that it is nothing serious and that the new classic champion can take his place in the Night of Stars on Saturday week.

Peter Cronin’s Crossfield Will was the fastest winner in the semi-finals of the Gain Select Stakes at Waterford on Saturday when he got the better of Newinn Lester and held off the big finishing Budgie Wudgie by a neck in 28.58, with Newinn Lester also qualifying.

Pat Guilfoyle’s Cabra Hurricane left his rivals trailing in the other semifinal and he coasted to a three-length margin over Doggy Mcdogface in 28.67
