President will take heart

IF America’s midterm elections were a referendum on President Donald Trump’s performanc­e so far, then this divided, polarised country delivered a predictabl­y split result.

Mr Trump will have woken up yesterday morning knowing that he lost control of the House of Representa­tives while at the same time his Republican party was on course to strengthen its grip on the Senate.
