Loft conversions put ‘daybed’ sales through the roof

- Jane Last

THE amount of loft conversions and extensions done by homeowners has rocketed in recent years due to the shortage in housing.

So it should come as no surprise that the daybed has become Ikea’s most popular product in Ireland.

The piece of furniture is often hailed by interior design experts as perfect

– as well as functional – for the small loft space. Figures from 2017 show homeowners spent some €1.3bn on extending their homes for three years previously – with loft conversions and extensions the most popular projects.

Ikea – which released results showing it enjoyed sales of €181.5m in this financial year – said the daybed was the most popular item in Ireland online.

The site recorded some 17 million visitors in this financial year.

For the four million visits recorded at its superstore in Ballymun and its order and collection point in Carrickmines, some shelving and frames were the most popular items.

Outdoor furniture was the biggest area of growth, with a total sales increase of 29pc, with Ikea attributing this to our scorching summer.
