McLarnon and Sugrue finish second in Argentina
MASSEREENE’S Tiarnan McLarnon and Mallow’s James Sugrue finished second behind hosts Argentina in the 47th Copa Juan Carlos Tailhade at Los Lagartos Country Club in Buenos Aires.
McLarnon shot rounds of 70, 70, 75 and 68 to claim a share of eighth place in the individual standings on three-over-par 283 with Sugrue tied 24th on 289 after rounds of 73, 74, 69 and 73.
Argentina’s Guillermo Estivill won the individual event by three strokes on three-under-par 277 while compatriots Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira and Martin Contini combined to win the international team title on level par 560
Ireland’s McLarnon and Sugure were second on 12-over par 572 with Germany third (575), Spain fourth (577) and Brazil and South Africa tied for fifth (579).
It was Argentina’s third win in the event, 14 years after Estanislao Goya and Sebastián Saavedra followed in the footsteps of 1996 winners Juan Pablo Abbate and Fernando Delia.
The Copa Juan Carlos Tailhade has an illustrious list of former winners including South Africa’s Trevor Immelman and Ulrich Van den Berg (1997), Australia’s Adam Scott and Kim Felton (1998) and Aaron Baddeley and Brett Rumford (1999).
England’s Gary Wolstenholme and Nick Dougherty won in 2000 while Canada’s Austin Connelly and Corey Conners took the title in 2014.
