Varadkar stance on confidence and supply talks ‘silly’: FF leader

- Philip Ryan

FIANNA Fáil leader Micheál Martin has described Taoiseach Leo Varadkar as “silly” over comments he made about the confidence and supply agreement.

The Taoiseach previously criticised Mr Martin’s suggestion of agreeing not to call an election until a Brexit deal passes through the British parliament.

He suggested it would tie Irish elections to a foreign jurisdiction. However, he never formally responded to Mr Martin’s offer.

Speaking on Newstalk, Mr Martin said: “He made a public response, which seemed to me to be quite silly to be frank, that somehow we were giving the British parliament a role in deciding whether the Irish Government would stay or fall, which I still can’t understand.”

Mr Varadkar said: “An Irish government or the Dáil should never fall because of what happens in another parliament, in Britain or the European Union.”
