Mild and wild: wet week ahead but temperatures to stay in double figures

THERE is yet more rainfall expected in the coming days – but at least the cold is set to stay away.

Three-times the average rainfall was recorded in Leinster and east Munster last weekend, Met Éireann confirmed, with no promise of a dry day until the end of the week.

Forecaster Liz O’Donnell warned of the risk of further heavy showers throughout the week.

“We will have a brief interlude for a time [today] when it is due to be dry and bright, and it will be generally more dry as we head towards the end of this week.”

While it was a frosty start this morning, with temperatures as low as 1C, temperatures will be in double figures for most of the week.

It will turn wet and blustery again later today, but the mercury will reach a relatively mild 14C. Ms O’Donnell explained that milder than average conditions will become fixed this week thanks to a predominantly southerly airflow.

Even during the night, temperatures could be in double figures, or dropping just slightly to 9C.

Tomorrow is expected to be “mild, breezy and wet”, with afternoon temperatures of between 13C and 15C.

It will be mild and misty later tomorrow night, but outbreaks of rain and drizzle will continue mainly in southern and western counties.

The forecaster said it will be drier elsewhere, with some clear breaks developing and patches of mist and fog.

There will still be “some rain” on Thursday, but the daytime temperatures will continue to be higher than normal.

The good news is that it looks like being sunnier at the weekend, with Sunday looking to be the best day.
