Lundy leaves the door open for possible return with Galway
COROFIN star Micheál Lundy has left the door open on a return to the Galway set-up.
Lundy was in excellent form for his club last Sunday, hitting 1-3 as they hammered Roscommon champions Clann na nGael in Dr Hyde Park to set up a date with Mayo’s Ballintubber in the Connacht decider on Sunday week.
Lundy wasn’t part of the Galway set-up in 2018 but he hinted that he could be open to a return.
“We’ll see how this goes,” Lundy replied when asked about his intercounty future.
“Hopefully we’ll have a long run here with Corofin and then you never know what could happen.”
Lundy also reckons that there could be a number of Corofin men putting their hand up for inclusion in Kevin Walsh’s panel given their form.
“(Galway) are flying it and hopefully they can push on. There are a few lads here now (with Corofin), if they keep playing as well as they are, they can push for a place next year.”
Last Sunday saw Corofin in action for the fourth weekend in a row after being brought to a replay in their county final.
Despite winning county titles six years on the bounce and playing straight through after their AllIreland club success in March, Lundy insists he and his team-mates are full of energy.
“Some of the lads were probably straight into the county. They probably didn’t get the break.
“The rest of us had a bit of a break at the start of the summer when the county were in full-flow there was a lack of club games, so you enjoy the down-time when you can.
“We enjoy playing football and we won’t complain about it as if we can keep playing games we are happy.”
Corofin won without the services of Ian and Daithi Burke, and Lundy explains that their panel is strong.
“You had Darragh Silke, Dylan Canney, Conor Cunningham, Barry O’Donovan, Ciaran McGrath all coming back – these lads want to play football. Ian Burke was missing and will hopefully be back (for the final) and Daithi will be back too but you need everyone pushing and it shows the level of competition of these boys coming on.”
Corofin will be clear favourites in their clash with Ballintubber but Lundy sounded a note of caution.
“We will get the bodies right with the two-week break for the first time in a long time after being out for four weeks in a row, so it will be nice to have a weekend off.
“We’ll need it because Ballintubber came out the other side and they are a serious team. Any team that can beat Castlebar and come out of Mayo have to be good.”
