Teen star Parsons set to make history

- Cian Tracey

VERSATILE Connacht back Beibhinn Parsons is in line to become to youngest player to be capped by Ireland in a modern era senior international Test when Adam Griggs’ side take on USA in Donnybrook on Sunday (1.0).

The 16-year old from Ballinasloe, who turns 17 later this month, has been named on the bench having come through the IRFU’s women’s talent ID programme. Parsons impressed for Connacht in their successful U-18 inter-pros campaign and just last week was on the victorious Ardscoil Mhuire side that claimed the national girls X7s title.

Griggs has named four uncapped players in the match-day squad as the head coach looks to improve his talent depth ahead of the Six Nations. The back-three features two new caps in full-back Lauren Delany, who has come through the IQ programme as well as Munster winger Laura Sheehan.

Parsons is amongst the replacements alongside Leinster hooker Emma Hooban and both will be hoping to make their international debuts.

There is plenty of experience in the starting XV with the likes of skipper Ciara Griffin, Claire Molloy and Sene Naoupu adding ballast. There remains no room in the squad for former captain Niamh Briggs however, as Griggs calls on her to recapture her best form.

““Selections were not an easy task and the players chosen to represent our squad and the jersey this week have stood up and worked hard to earn their selection,” said Griggs.
