Locals oppose Crosbie’s plan for seven-storey hotel in capital’s Liberties
PLANS by developer Harry Crosbie for a new 185-bedroom hotel at Vicar Street in Dublin’s Liberties area have run into opposition.
In September, Mr Crosbie’s Vicar Street Hotel Ltd lodged plans for the eight-storey hotel.
The plan, for an underutilised site registered on Dublin City Council’s vacant site register, also includes a creative art studio and a bar lounge at the seventh floor level.
A report accompanying the planning application states that the development will contribute significantly towards the implementation of a core strategy of the City Development Plan in respect of regeneration, urban design and economic and tourism development.
The report also states the hotel “can provide a catalyst and dynamic for the regeneration and redevelopment of the Liberties area and will enhance the attractiveness and diversification of the city’s tourist accommodation offer”.
Fáilte Ireland has made a submission with the council in support of the application.
However, a number of local residents – supported by People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith – have lodged objections against the plan.
In total, 12 objections have been lodged against the plan.
The residents of Catherine Street have told the city council that the development would cause much distress to the residents of the area – an area, they say, that has had continuous development for the past two years.
Many of the residents of Michael Mallin House are opposing the plan, which they say is twice the height of their building “as well as towering over houses located on Catherine Street and Ash Street”.
A decision is due on the application before the end of this month.
