‘Occupation’ TDs demand KBC reviews ‘repossession processes’

INDEPENDENT TDs who staged a protest at KBC Bank are to demand new protocols for dealing with mortgage holders in arrears when they meet officials from the financial institution in the new year.

Deputies Mattie McGrath, Carol Nolan and Michael Collins carried out what was described as an “occupation” of the bank’s branch on Dublin’s Baggot Street for more than seven hours on Wednesday. It came after the controversial eviction in Roscommon last week.

The eviction took place on the back of a court order after unpaid debt to KBC over a number of years. The TDs ended their protest after 9pm on Wednesday when they were told two senior personnel from the bank would meet them on January 9.

Mr McGrath said: “Carol, Michael and myself will be demanding that the bank immediately review the protocols it has in place with respect to debt resolution processes.”

The Tipperary TD said the TDs “fully accept the legitimate right of the bank to recoup losses that it has incurred in terms of mortgage distress”, but he said this must be “proportionate” and “fair”.

He said banks should avoid an “endless and stressful merry-go-round” for those in mortgage arrears: “People feel like they are being worn down by the tactics of some of the banks and that has to stop.”

A KBC spokesperson insisted the bank worked with customers in financial difficulties to seek sustainable solutions “while being clear and fair in our communications and dealings”. They added: “We are always mindful and respectful of individual circumstances and we do as much as we can to avoid any financial difficulties situations arising.”
