Bafta blues: Saoirse misses out but 12 nods for ‘The Favourite’
SAOIRSE Ronan missed out on a nomination in the British Academy Film Awards yesterday, despite her performance in ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ being tipped as an Oscar-worthy role.
In the past, the 24-year-old has been nominated four times for a Bafta, once in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category for ‘Atonement’ in 2008, with nods in 2010, 2016, and 2018 for ‘Lovely Bones’, ‘Brooklyn’ and ‘Lady Bird’ respectively as a leading actress.
However her co-star Margot Robbie had better luck and was named among the stars nominated for the Best Supporting Actress for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in the film.
But it was good news for the Irish-produced film ‘The Favourite’, as it lead the way in the nominations with a total of 12 nominations overall.
Olivia Colman has been nominated in the leading actress category for her role as Queen Anne in the film, just days after winning a Golden Globe.
She will compete against Glenn Close for ‘The Wife’, Lady Gaga for ‘A Star Is Born’, Melissa McCarthy for ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’ and Viola Davis for ‘Widows’.
Her co-stars Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone have both received nods in the supporting actress category, and director Yorgos Lanthimos is also nominated.
The film is also up for Best Film and Outstanding British Film. It faces stiff competition from motion pictures ‘Beast’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘McQueen’, ‘Stan and Ollie’, and ‘You Were Never Really Here’.
The ceremony takes place on February 10 in the Royal Albert Hall in London.
