Midleton score seven goals to book semi spot

- DR HARTY CUP QUARTER-FINALS

LAST YEAR’S beaten Dr Harty Cup finalists Midleton CBS struck seven goals as they sent out an emphatic message in seeing off Our Lady’s Secondary School of Templemore in yesterday’s quarter-final at Bansha.

Kian Farmer, Gary Hankard and Jason Hankard all netted in the first half as Midleton built a 3-7 to 0-11 lead, with Gearóid O’Connor and James Devanney on target for Templemore. Midleton soon added three more, with Hankard and Farmer both doubling their tallies while Ryan McCarthy found the net too.

A seventh goal came from Joe Stack as Midleton ran out 7-15 to 0-19 winners. They will face De La Salle of Waterford in the semi-finals after Alan Kirwan’s 20th-minute goal proved to be the difference in DLS’s 1-14 to 0-14 win over St Colman’s, Fermoy at Fraher Field.

Thurles CBS and John The Baptist CS from Hospital played out a thrilling draw in Dundrum. Seventy minutes of normal time, 20 minutes of extra-time and then an additional ten minutes couldn’t produce a winner, with Thurles scoring 3-31 to their opponents’ 4-28.

Nailed

JTB looked to have done enough when they led by five points as full-time loomed, but a goal from Paddy Creedon – his second of three – helped Thurles force extra-time.

Creedon struck again as Thurles pushed on but Dylan O’Shea struck from a penalty for Hospital and then he nailed a long-range free to tie the game again after 80 minutes.

Once again, Thurles went ahead in the second stage of extra-time but again O’Shea levelled. While the game should have moved to a ’65 shoot-out, the sides agreed to a replay. O’Shea hit 2-17 while Thurles’ Devon Ryan scored 0-14.

The winners will meet Cork’s CBC, who were 2-14 to 2-12 winners against Nenagh CBS. Nenagh looked to have snatched it when Bryan McLoughney’s goal from a free put them a point ahead in injury time, but Declan Hanlon netted for Christians at the death.
