‘Those suggesting that we give up meat never did a day’s work,’ says Healy-Rae

- Cormac McQuinn

INDEPENDENT TD Danny Healy-Rae has claimed workers need a meatbased meal like “bacon and cabbage” to get them through the day.

He made the remarks as he criticised Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, who said he’s cutting back on meat to help to reduce his carbon footprint.

Despite the scientific evidence on the causes of climate change, Mr Healy-Rae has previously argued that it is not being brought about by human actions.

Last night, Mr Healy-Rae

said: “It is ridiculous to think that people should stop eating meat to change or protect the weather.”

Mr Varadkar did not say people should stop eating meat, but said he’s eating less for health and climate change reasons. “It’s easy to know that fellas who are talking about stopping people eating meat never worked hard,” Mr Healy-Rae said. “Because if you’re a hard worker and do a hard day’s work there’s nothing to bring you back and to revive you again than a piece of good meat, whether it is bacon and cabbage or beef or mutton stew.

“If you don’t have that you won’t rise out the following day. It’s easy to know these people that are suggesting that we should give up eating meat, they never did a day’s work. If there was a shovel put into their hands, they’d starve with the hunger because they won’t make it until dinner time.”
