Spurs woe sees Kane out until March
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR have suffered a huge blow following confirmation that Harry Kane has damaged ankle ligaments and is expected to be out until March.
The news has also seemingly dashed Kane’s hope that he may return in time for a potential Carabao Cup final appearance and shot at winning his first trophy with Spurs.
Striker Kane underwent a scan on his left ankle that was injured by a late challenge from Manchester United defender Phil Jones and was wearing a protective boot and walking with crutches yesterday morning.
In the evening, Spurs released a statement that read: “Following preliminary assessments, we can confirm @HKane has damaged ligaments in his left ankle, sustained during Sunday’s match. He will continue to be monitored by our medical staff as he commences rehabilitation and is expected to return to training in early March.”
That appears to have ruled Kane out of the rest of Tottenham’s Carabao Cup campaign, ahead of next Thursday night’s semi-final, second leg against Chelsea and a potential final appearance on February 24.
Kane had initially targeted the final as a potential comeback date. He now looks set to miss out if Spurs get to Wembley, however, and could also miss both legs of Tottenham’s Champions League last-16 tie against Borussia Dortmund. Spurs entertain Dortmund at Wembley on February 13, with the return leg on March 5.
Kane’s absence could not come at a worse time for manager Mauricio Pochettino with Son Heung-min away at the Asia Cup, potentially until the end of the month, with South Korea.
That leaves Pochettino with Fernando Llorente, who had been set to leave Spurs this month and Lucas Moura as his forward options.
Tottenham’s Premier League title aspirations also took a knock with the United defeat. They will go into Sunday’s clash with Fulham nine points behind leaders Liverpool, and five behind second-placed Manchester City. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
