Newcastle survive scare to beat Blackburn in extra-time

NEWCASTLE UNITED survived an FA Cup scare as they beat Blackburn 4-2 after extra-time. Joselu’s controversial strike put the Magpies ahead in extra-time before Ayoze Perez sealed a third round replay victory.

Sean Longstaff and Callum Roberts scored their first Newcastle goals to put the Magpies 2-0 ahead at Ewood Park, with Longstaff netting after just 56 seconds. But Adam Armstrong and Ireland international Darragh Lenihan levelled before half-time and neither side could find a winner in 90 minutes. Newcastle have earned a home tie with Watford.

Sheffield Wednesday will face FA Cup holders Chelsea just four days before Steve Bruce is due to start work as their manager after beating Luton Town 1-0 in their third round replay at Kenilworth Road.

Blocked

Atdhe Nuhiu scored the only goal and the visitors from the Championship had to fight to protect their lead against their hosts from League One.

Liam Palmer’s cross from the right was pulled down and turned towards goal by Steven Fletcher but his effort was blocked and spun towards Nuhiu, the giant Kosovan striker, who was able to divert it inside the post.

Nathan Jones, who left Luton to take over as Stoke City manager last week, suffered his second defeat in as many games in last night’s other replay. League One Shrewsbury produced a superb late comeback to shock Stoke 3-2.

Jones’ Championship side appeared to be cruising after Tyrese Campbell’s first-half brace.

But James Bolton started the fightback with 19 minutes left before Fejiri Okenabirhie equalised from the penalty spot in the 77th minute.

And Josh Laurent rounded off a remarkable turnaround when he struck the winner in the 81st minute as the Shrews booked a home tie with Premier League side Wolves in the fourth round.
