Vietnam to host second Trump-Kim summit

DONALD TRUMP and Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, will meet for a second time at a summit later this month, the US president said yesterday.

The talks in Vietnam follow the historic handshake in Singapore last June and will focus on agreeing concrete steps towards the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

Mr Trump will also make his second presidential visit to Britain in December, when he is expected to attend a Nato meeting in London.

The Kim-Trump talks have been months in the making, with US officials taking care to pick a suitable location for the two-day summit starting on February 27. America was in the running to host the event in early discussions but Da Nang, a coastal city in central Vietnam, has been named in Asian media reports as a possibility.

US intelligence chiefs last week said they did not expect Mr Kim (35) to give up his nuclear weapons, a statement which contrasted sharply with Mr Trump’s public optimism.

North Korea is expected to prioritise the lifting of UN sanctions, which analysts believe are having an impact on the country’s economy. America has insisted sanctions will only be lifted once denuclearisation occurs. (© Daily Telegraph London)
