Byrnes’ penalty miss proves costly for LIT

-

NUIG had to withstand a second-half comeback from Limerick IT to earn a last-four date with Mary I.

LIT had a chance to claim victory in injury-time when Diarmaid Byrnes stood over a penalty but the Limerick star fired wide. NUIG had earlier raced into a five-point lead in the opening quarter thanks to Evan Niland before LIT got a foothold with Peter Casey’s close-range finish which left it 0-10 to 1-3 at half-time.

Byrnes got LIT’s second goal on 40 minutes but NUIG responded with a Conor Sheedy goal. After Byrnes’ late miss, it was left to Niland to fire over a free from the touchline to secure a semi-final place for NUIG.
