Cambay delaying tactics secure title for Andrew’s

-

ISEULT CAMBAY’S scrambling heroics came in the nick of time as St Andrew’s won their seventh Leinster Schoolgirls Senior Cup title in a penalty shoot-out.

The diminutive goalkeeper held up Emma Paul for just long enough to see the Wesley defender’s shoot-out effort cross the line moments after the end of her eight-second time limit.

It handed Andrew’s a 3-2 success in the shoot-out, coming back from 2-0 down with immaculate sweeper Katie-Jane Marshall stepping up to score in both the regulation first five and in sudden death.

The Booterstown outfit drew plenty of inspiration from their coach Gillian Pinder – a winner in 2009 and 2010 – who shone bright in the format last summer in the World Cup semi-final.

“Katie is better at them than me,” Pinder joked afterwards. “We were 2-0 down in our quarter-final as well but the girls are just so calm under pressure.”

In normal time, Martha McCready struck before half-time to give Andrew’s the lead before Wesley fought back and got a brilliant equaliser via Lara Gillespie.
