Scholes takes charge at Oldham after receiving League clearance

PAUL SCHOLES will be confirmed as the new manager of Oldham Athletic today.

The 44-year-old former Manchester United and England midfielder has agreed to make his managerial bow at the League Two club.

His appointment had been held up while he awaited clearance from the English Football League to take charge.

Scholes owns a 10pc stake in National League promotion-chasers Salford City along with five of his former Old Trafford team-mates and the EFL needed to investigate his position since their rules prohibit a person holding roles with two clubs at the same time without the prior consent of the board.

Oldham, who are 14th in League Two after their 3-0 win away at Crawley on Saturday, have been looking for a permanent manager since sacking Frankie Bunn in December.

It is unclear if Scholes will take charge of their match against Yeovil tomorrow or whether his first formal game at the helm will be the visit of Crewe Alexandra next Saturday.

Scholes talked only last month about his desperation to get back into football, almost six years since his retirement after an illustrious playing career. His coaching experience is very limited and he has yet to undertake his UEFA Pro Licence. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
