Offering the works at period Inchicore terrace with an unorthodox layout
HAVING built a giant engineering works on a 73-acre site at Inchicore in 1846, the Great Southern & Western Railway then set about providing accommodation for its workers.
The company built an entire estate of comfortable dwellings, colloquially known as The Works Estate, but did not stop at simply housing the workers.
The houses came with big gardens for home growing, and were built to encircle health-giving public parks, and their occupants were also supplied with a school. Employment — and hence a measure of independence — was found for the local women too, in making the railway workers’ uniforms. Even recreation was provided for in the shape of the Inchicore Sports & Social Club, which then included a library.
Inchicore Sports & Social Club is still open today, though no longer run by CIE, and remains a social centre for the people of this close-knit community. It stands at the western end of Inchicore Square, facing across a tree-studded pocket park towards Inchicore Square East.
No13 Inchicore Square East has had a complete makeover including a two-storey rear extension. It now has a somewhat unorthodox but very workable interior layout, with the living rooms on the first floor.
It now measures 1,507 sq ft and has two bedrooms where there used to be three. These are both on the ground floor, and the master bedroom at the back has French doors to the garden. There’s also a lounge inside the front door here with a stove, but the main living room is upstairs. At the rear of the first floor is the kitchen and dining room, which has a door to a balcony and steps down to the garden.
Despite the extension, the garden is still 65ft long and has a lawn, some mature ornamental trees and flowerbeds.
