Where and how to use your Gaeilge

Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia is a great way to start using more Irish in your everyday life. Why not go to an event or even organise your own from 1–17 March!

There are lots of things that can be done even after the festival and hundreds of Irish language events take place all over the country every week; from a ciorcal comhrá to a Pop-Up Gaeltacht you’ll be able to keep enjoying the language even after March 17th.

Here are some top tips to up your Gaeilge usage:

ÉIST:

Listen to Raidió Rí-Rá, Raidió Fáilte, Raidió na Life or Raidió na dTreabh to get started. These play a variety of music in Irish and English. Lots of stations also have an Irish show, such as Pop-Raidió on Spin so keep an ear out for those too.

PODCHRAOLT­AÍ:

If podcasts are more your thing, check out Beo ar Éigean or Motherfocl­óir.

NA MEÁIN SHÓISIALTA:

We all spend far too much time on social media, so why not make the most of your time online by using your Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp as Gaeilge.

Go to language settings and begin using more Gaeilge, Gmail is available in Irish too.

LÉAMH:

In the Independen­t every Wednesday there’s an Irish supplement called Seachtain.

There are also online Irish sites such as Tuairisc.ie that has current affairs stories as Gaeilge and a lifestyle site, Nós. ie.

IMEACHTAÍ:

The best way to use more Gaeilge is by attending an event, find out what’s going on as Gaeilge in your area on www.PEIG.ie.

GAELTACHT:

It’s always a great idea to head to the Gaeltacht and spend a few days immersing yourself in our beautiful language.

Some of the most beautiful parts of our country are in Gaeltacht areas so get planning your next road trip now and start practicing your cúpla focal!
