Gorey advance in cup after Duke drop goal secures 95th-minute win

GOREY dramatically secured the eighth and final place in this year’s Bank of Ireland Provincial Towns Cup third round when out-half Stephen Duke dropped a 95th-minute drop goal to defeat their hosts Naas 22-20 last Sunday in Forenaughts.

That win has earned Gorey a quarter-final visit to All-Ireland Junior Cup champions Ashbourne on March 17.

Four of the five divisions in the Leinster League draw to a close this weekend with two winners still to be decided and all promotion play-off spots in the four divisions still up for grabs.

Suttonians were crowned champions of Division 1B two weeks ago and have been automatically promoted to Division 1A but Longford and Monkstown still entertain hopes of making the promotion play-off.

Second-placed Longford lead Monkstown by a point and their final game on Sunday is away in the Maws, Kilcock against bottom side and already-relegated North Kildare.

The Dublin 4 club travel to Coolmine, who will be in the relegation play-off regardless of Sunday’s result.

A win at home in Gordon Park, Kingswood for Clondalkin against Railway Union, who will be in the relegation play-off come what may, will deliver the Division 2A title for the west Dubliners while second-placed Cill Dara will secure the promotion playoff with a similar result at home against New Ross, who have already been relegated.

Edenderry need a bonus-point win at home in Coolavacoose, Carbury against Portarlington to secure the Division 2B crown while the winner of third-placed Arklow against second-placed Balbriggan will be in the promotion playoff.

North Meath won Division 3 a fortnight ago but second-placed Roscrea need to win at home against RCSI if they are to fend off the challenge of Ardee, who are at home to Swords, to win the right to play Garda in a promotion play-off.
