The do’s and don’ts of spa etiquette

Brush up on your spa etiquette with these handy tips

-

Do…arrive early

Some resort and hotel spas may have guidelines with regards to how early you should arrive prior to your treatment. This will ensure that all their appointments run smoothly and you can also reap the benefits of your experience, as you will have additional time to relax and use the spa’s facilities. A late arrival means a shortened treatment time and the disadvantage of still paying the full price!

Don’t…cancel half-an-hour before treatment

Many spas also have a cancellation policy, so check this out before booking in. There are, of course, some situations that can happen which may be out of your hands and result in having to cancel your appointment. But, remember that it is unfair to cancel a treatment last-minute without having a valid reason, as you are only wasting the therapist’s time. If the spa was all booked up, someone else who wanted to book a slot will be missing out if you cancel last-minute. Not to mention, you could lose out on getting your money back.

Do…shower beforehand

According to Emma Doyle, Spa Manager of Seoíd Spa at 4-Star Dunboyne Castle Hotel, Co Meath (www.dunboynecastlehotel.com), it is not a requirement to shower before treatments, but it is good etiquette. “I would advise showering before using thermal suite facilities and another quick shower after using the facilities to feel refreshed going in for your treatment.”

Don’t…feel awkward

“It is important to bear in mind that our highly trained and experienced therapists meet guests of all shapes and sizes each day,” says Emma. “We are not looking at lumps and bumps or wondering why the guest hasn’t shaved their legs. We are there to ensure each guest gets the maximum benefit out of their treatment, be it total relaxation or to revive a dull complexion. We aim to send each guest away feeling great about themselves and the treatment they have just had.”

Do…speak up

If you have any issues with room temperature or the spa’s music choice and volume, do let your therapist know. Don’t be afraid to ask any questions or look for advice, and if your skin is feeling irritated at any stage, mention this to the therapist.

Don’t…bring along your phone

“We work very hard to create a calm relaxing environment for all our guests and if some guests are ignoring spa etiquette and taking selfies in the pool or text messages keep beeping in, it can disturb other guest’s relaxation,” says Emma. “Being at the spa is an opportunity to completely switch off from the world for half-an-hour or an hour, so take advantage of this stress-free time!”
