Among the many things you pick up from browsing the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) is a vocabulary of odd words that will probably never come in handy unless you’re playing a really nasty game of Scrabble.
Take ‘squinch’, for instance, which is defined as a “straight or arched structure across an interior angle of a square tower to carry a superstructure such as a dome”.
You’d need to see one for yourself to understand, and you can, at Henry Bridge which crosses the Grand Canal at Tipperstown, Co Kildare. The bridge, according to the NIAH, is “of considerable historical and social significance” not least because of its squinch.
Probably more significantly for local residents, Henry Bridge is also a waypoint on the Grand Canal Greenway. You can turn left there and walk west towards the Shannon, or turn right and make for Lucan.
