O’Brien reveals Santiago could chase famous treble in Epsom Derby following Irish triumph

AIDAN O’BRIEN has not ruled out an unconventionally quick return for Santiago in Saturday’s Epsom equivalent after he led home a 1-2-3-4 for the Ballydoyle maestro in the Irish Derby.

In a regular year, the Derby comes before Royal Ascot and the Irish

Derby but, having won the Queen’s Vase at Ascot and Ireland’s premier Classic on Saturday, Santiago could try for a unique treble.

Speaking on Racing TV’s Luck on Sunday programme, O’Brien insisted that “it’s very possible” that Santiago or some of those beaten in the Irish Derby could return just seven days later in the Epsom showpiece.

“It’s very possible. I spoke to (owners) John (Magnier), Michael (Tabor) and Derrick (Smith) yesterday and the entries are being made on Monday. They’ll wait to see what everybody thinks before they decide to make an entry or not,” O’Brien said.

“If any of them have come out of the race exceptionally well and they want to make an entry, then that’s what will happen.

“They didn’t do much today but they’ll do a canter tomorrow.

“I’m sure we’ll speak sometime through the morning and then see what they want to do, but it’s not impossible. Nothing is definitely ruled out.”

Normally, colts are nominated for the Derby as yearlings and taken out, or added in, at various entry stages for varying amounts.

This year, however, there is a one-off £10,000 entry today.

O’Brien already has six Epsom hopefuls in the shape of Mythical, Amhran Na Bhfiann, Russian Emperor, Mogul, Vatican City and Armory, and all eyes will be on whether Santiago, which handed O’Brien a 14th Irish Derby success, shows no ill-effects from his exertions at the Curragh.
