Leinster show the way: Cullen’s boys in blue reap the rewards from a moment of magic off a stunning set-piece move to defeat arch rivals

-

1. First things first, Munster are rightly aggrieved because Rónan Kelleher’s throw did not look straight, and therefore a scrum should have been awarded to the hosts. The trajectory of the Leinster hooker’s throw veered to the right, to James Ryan, and we can see the touch judge (yellow) tilting his head to the side in order to get a better look. However, it was one of several questionable calls made by the officials.

3. Robbie Henshaw makes a trademark hard carry off McGrath’s crisp pass, and it takes two Munster players, Damian de Allende and Ben Healy to take down the Leinster centre. It’s important to highlight Leinster’s breakdown work here, as Caelan Doris and Ed Byrne recognise the counterruck threat of De Allende, who is ferociously cleared out. And from there, the platform is set from which to play.

5. We can see the real impact of Molony’s line here as the Munster defence becomes too bunched (yellow) and with Ringrose continuing his line (blue), Van der Flier has Jamison Gibson-Park supporting him on his inside with Ross Byrne on the outside (green). Keith Earls (red) spots the danger and immediately sprints to the opposite wing to try and make up the ground.

7. Keenan reads Byrne’s kick and after the ball sits up nicely, the full-back brilliantly offloads (yellow) out of the tackle to Larmour (blue), who has held his width on the right wing, with Earls closing him down (red).

2. After Leinster got away with the crooked throw, it was all about the brilliance of a pre-rehearsed set-piece move. Ryan wins the ball and neatly transfers it to Josh van der Flier (yellow), who repeats the trick out the back to Luke McGrath (red), who has worked hard to sweep around the fringe.

4. Leinster’s animation off the ball is excellent, as Ross Molony (yellow) runs a hard decoy line with McGrath and Van der Flier linking up out the back for the second time in the move. Molony draws in a couple of Munster defenders, while Garry Ringrose is also about to run a dummy line (blue) between Jean Kleyn and Chris Farrell.

6. Byrne could easily put the ball through the hands to Hugo Keenan (yellow) and Jordan Larmour (blue), but the out-half waits until the final possible moment before playing a sumptuous grubber kick (black) in behind the on-rushing defence. Again note, how Earls (red) is haring across to provide cover.

8. Larmour’s footwork is devastating as he dances off his right and back inside Earls, who was left with too much to do. Gibson-Park has swept across from the opposite wing in support, but Larmour finishes with ease to score a quite brilliant try.
