The suspect was shot by police after the attack in Heidelberg, Germany.
The man who died was a 73-year-old German.
The 35-year-old suspect – also German – was shot by police officers during a brief stand-off.
Officers pointed their handguns at the man, who was obscured by a car parked in the street, before a single gunshot was heard.
Officers rushed towards the injured suspect on the pavement as people watched from the street or from flats or hotel rooms above shops.
A 32-year-old Austrian man and a 29-year-old woman from Bosnia and Herzegovina, also received hospital treatment but were discharged, police said.
They added: “Based on investigations so far, there are no signs of a terrorist motive.”
KNIFE
Initial reports suggested it was a deliberate attack by the driver, who was hunted down and shot in front of witnesses. Police said the suspect allegedly ploughed into pedestrians in front of a bakery at around 4pm local time yesterday. Witnesses pointed the suspect out to police as he fled. Officers opened fire after he allegedly ignored orders to drop the weapon, Heidelberg 24 reported. The suspect received hospital treatment. Investigators did not reveal his motive, but said a terrorism link was not suspected and it is thought he acted alone. Local media reports suggested he had mental health issues. In December an attacker deliberately drove a lorry into the Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring more than 50. That attack was later claimed by the terror group ISIS.
