BRIDGE CARRIES THE FIGHT

- BY RYAN MCELLIGOTT

THE John Ryan-trained Kilcarry Bridge landed the valuable Holden Plant Rentals Shamrock Handicap Chase at Gowran yesterday.

The experienced 10-year- old produced a fine display under Donagh Meyler who had him up with the pace from an early stage.

The 10/1 chance lost the lead to Black Zero with two to jump but rallied well on the run in to score by two and a half lengths. “Off his light weight I thought that he had a chance and he’s as tough as nails,” said a delighted Ryan.

“He handles soft ground but he is better on better ground and will probably go next to Punchestown for the AON Handicap Chase,” added Ryan.

Gordon Elliott (right), who has much to look forward to at Cheltenham next week, was on the mark with General Principle in the beginner’s chase. The 8/15 favourite was left with the simplest of tasks when market rival Dicosimo crashed out early on.

Elliott was also expected to land the opening maiden hurdle but his odds on favourite Chirico Vallis ran out at the second hurdle.

This paved the way for Lachares to score for young trainer Ellmarie Holden and in form jockey Rachael Blackmore. Earlier Castlegrace Paddy looked a class act as he bolted up in the second of the maiden hurdles.

The Davy Russell-ridden gelding quickened up smartly in between the last two flights to score by nine lengths.

Elsewhere Michael Hourigan’s Donegal Tuesday dominated the handicap hurdle, running out a 14 lengths winner under Dylan Robinson.
