Flint has edge for Robins

- At the DW Stadium

BRISTOL CITY boss Lee Johnson admitted the closing stages of this win at fellow strugglers Wigan “felt like three hours”.

Honours had looked set to end even at the DW Stadium between sides that started the day second and thirdbottom respectively.

But with just three minutes remaining, City defender Aden Flint (No.4, above) popped up to apply the finishing touch following a dodgy corner to secure a vital three points that lifted the Robins out of the drop zone at Blackburn’s expense.

“We needed that – the run we’ve been on hasn’t been great, to say the least,” Johnson said.

“I’m just delighted to get the win as we had that bit of luck.

“It probably wasn’t a corner but we got it and, over the course of the 90 minutes, we were the better side. We had chances in the first half. “It’s a massive win and the players are buzzing – it’s like a nightclub in that dressing room! We’ve needed that winning feeling back, especially today, which had a cup final feeling about it.

“The last five minutes was like three hours for me, but I thought we looked reasonably solid. That goal has rewarded us for sticking in there.

“It was scrappy, yes, but it was always going to be as it was: two teams fighting for their lives.”

Wigan boss Warren Joyce was left to once again bemoan a lack of quality in the final third that ruined his side’s efforts elsewhere on the park.

“It’s a cruel way to lose a game,” Joyce said. “We’ve looked at the build-up, it’s not a corner, and he’s in an offside position anyway.

“Having said that, I don’t think we played well enough today – although we didn’t deserve to lose the game.

“We didn’t play with enough quality or drive, didn’t win as many individual battles as you’d like, and we gave away too many cheap free-kicks, which slows play down and takes pressure off them.” Possession Shots On Target Shots Off Target Blocked Shots Corners Fouls Conceded Offsides Yellow Cards Red Cards 49% 51% 4 2 3 8 1 4 8 9 14 9 3 1 2 1 0 0
