Labour stand united with bus workers
THE Labour Party yesterday passed a motion in support of striking Bus Eireann workers.
Services are at a standstill over industrial action in a dispute over costcutting measures.
Some rail routes in the South and West have been affected but Iarnrod Eireann advised passengers it was business as usual.
A number of intercity services were disrupted by the strike on Friday due to picketing.
Last night Labour’s central council issued a statement pledging its unanimous support. It said: “The Labour Party stands in solidarity with Bus Eireann workers, and calls for the Government to immediately take four actions to resolve the dispute.”
These include an Employment Order to prevent private operators taking over routes, a State subsidy for the free travel scheme, and intervention by Transport Minister Shane Ross.
Bus Eireann lost €9.4million last year and has so far been haemorrhaging around €50,000 a day since January.
