Tributes to teen killed in crash with lorry as girlfriend left critical

- BY DAVID MAHER news@irishmirror.ie

TRIBUTES were paid last night to a tragic teenager killed in a car crash and his girlfriend who was left fighting for her life.

Gary Kelly, 19, died at the scene after a collision between his car and a lorry on the N21 at Wards Cross on the Limerick side of Abbeyfeal at around 7.40pm on Friday.

Delia Keary, 18, who was a passenger in the car, was taken to the city’s University Hospital with serious injuries.

Sean, a friend of Gary’s, said the accident has deeply affected him.

He told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “I knew Gary fairly well, he was a very nice young lad. It really puts things into perspective, that they can just be gone in an instant.”

And other friends of the pair took to social media yesterday to pay tribute.

One user said: “I know you will never be forgotten, you will be remembered by all you touched in your life you brought positivity and love when it was most needed a pat on the back or a hug when nothing else could help.

“You will live on in all those who loved you. Until we see each other next we will mourn your passing each day.”

Another added: “Gary may we meet again, may your soul rest in peace with the company of the angels.”

A friend wrote: “Gary, you were such a wonderful person, and Delia just as wonderful.

“I’m so grateful to have had you in my life for as long as you were here, and I hope you rest in peace. With all my love x”

A heartbroken pal posted: “Rest in peace Gary Kelly my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. God took you too soon you still had your whole life to live but he gained a beautiful soul who was always smiling.”

DRIVER

Gary, an apprentice electrician from Ennis, Co Clare, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to University Hospital Limerick. The driver of the truck was uninjured.

It is believed the couple were on their way to Killarney, Co Kerry, for the weekend when the crash happened.

Fine Gael councillor Pat Daly said his thoughts were with the couple’s loved ones, adding: “It’s a very sad occasion for both families.”

Tributes continued to pour in from those who knew Gary last night.

One read: “Rip young blood, gone but not forgotten, my heart goes out to your family. Honestly can’t believe it.”

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact Newcastle West Garda station on 069 20650 or The Garda Confidential Telephone Line on 1800 666 111.

The news comes as another person lost their life on our roads on Friday.

A cyclist was killed following a collision on Patrick’s Street, South Dublin.

The incident occurred at 12.44am when the man in his 40s collided with a car.

He was rushed to St James’s Hospital by ambulance where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

A Garda investigation has begun into the crash and the scene of the incident was closed to facilitate an examination of the area by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
