FAVOURITE BLITZES THE FIELD IN DUBAI
ARROGATE came from last to first to blitz his Dubai World Cup foes and underline his status as the world’s best racehorse.
The Bob Baffert-trained grey, winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita in November – and the inaugural running of the world’s richest race, the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park in January – was 1-3 favourite to outclass 13 runners in the $10million Meydan highlight. Mike Smith’s mount, carrying the silks of Prince Khalid Abdullah, was soon trailing as the result of interference following a slow start.
But Smith weaved his way through the field before Arrogate powered to the front with 150 yards of the 10-furlong race to run to beat Gun Runner by two-and-a-quarter lengths.
