Labour Senator Aodhan O Riordain believes the incident is a reminder homophobia still exists and we can “never be complacent” about equality and LGBT rights. The former Equality Minister said: “Since the referendum two years ago there’s a sense Ireland has become more progressive but this shows that’s not always the case.
“It’s a tiny reminder that there is still homophobia in Ireland. But it looks like a brighter future is ahead when we could have an openly-gay Taoiseach in the coming weeks.
“When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s this type of attack was common, so at least if we’re shocked by it now it’s a good step.”
