- G&V HOTEL EDINBURGH

WHERE AND WHY Halfway along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, on the George IV Bridge, sits a building that from the outside looks like a nondescript bank. But inside it’s one of the most luxurious places to stay in Scotland’s lovely capital. There’s a welcoming foyer with a modern fireplace, plenty

of seats to have coffee or cocktails, and a boldly coloured restaurant. Each room is individually styled and if you are lucky enough to stay in the castle suite, you are treated to a view of the imposing fortress.

ON THE MENU Guests enjoy an inclusive breakfast in Cucina, the restaurant that is also open to nonresidents for afternoon tea or an evening meal. Pasta dishes are from €14, main courses such as the “petto di pollo arrostito servito con bietola, lenticchie, orzo e purè di patate” (BBQ chicken, veg and mashed potatoes, a mouthful in every sense)

is €21. There’s a five-course tasting menu at €64. Room service also available.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE There is so much to explore right on the doorstep. You are moments away from the Elephant House, where JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter over a cup of coffee; also nearby is the sentimental statue of Greyfriars Bobby; you’re five minutes (then centuries underground) to Real Mary King’s Close. There’s the castle of course, or Holyrood House and the Scottish Parliament down the hill. Shopping on Princes Street is 10 minutes’ walk away, as is the Scott Monument with excellent views of the city to reward you for your climb.
