Trib­utes to tragic fish­er­man Jamie ...the ‘true gent’

A huge search op­er­a­tion was launched on Fri­day af­ter­noon and con­tin­ued un­til the heart­break­ing dis­cov­ery yes­ter­day at 10am.

It’s un­der­stood the 28-year-old was with his un­cle and boat skip­per Keith Mcal­lis­ter when their boat sank close to the shore off Sker­ries, Co Dublin.

Emer­gency ser­vices man­aged to pull Keith from the wa­ter soon af­ter and he was treated on shore be­fore be­ing rushed to Beau­mont Hos­pi­tal where he is re­cov­er­ing.

Friends posted on Face­book send­ing their con­do­lences to the Mcal­lis­ter fam­ily and re­mem­bered Jamie as a “true gent”.

Sa­man­tha Hughes, a neigh­bour in Mourne View, said: “Sker­ries has had more than its fair share of tragedies and it’s in these hard times we should re­mem­ber to hold our loved ones close.

“RIP Jamie Mcal­lis­ter. You will be missed, think­ing of all his fam­ily and friends who are suf­fer­ing at this huge loss, send­ing love to you all.”

An­other trib­ute read: “My lad went to school with Jamie and was a friend of his.

“I can’t even be­gin to think what his fam­ily are feel­ing now – so so sad – I am truly sorry for your loss and our thoughts are of you all.”

The com­mu­nity has been left shaken by the news of Jamie’s death but there was also praise for the tire­less ef­forts of the emer­gency ser­vices who tried to save his life.

The RNLI Sker­ries lifeboat was on the scene within min­utes af­ter a lo­cal res­i­dent, who saw the small trawler cap­size, alerted them. Jamie’s body was found around 500 me­tres from the lo­cal pier af­ter the RV Keary, a ge­o­log­i­cal sur­vey boat, re­ported a read­ing on their sonar.

Naval ship LE Orla op­er­ated as the on-scene co­or­di­na­tor for the search with help from LE Ni­amh, Air Corps CASA mar­itime sur­veil­lance air­craft, RNLI Lifeboats and the RV Keary as well as the Garda dive team. Lo­cal vol­un­teers from Howth, Sker­ries and Clogher­head were also praised.
