Aaron scores winning Cup Final goal just like he did to beat Hull in 2014

- BY SIMON MULLOCK from Wembley

IT was fitting that Aaron Ramsey scored yet another goal to rescue Arsenal’s season.

When the Welsh midfielder stooped to head home Olivier Giroud’s 79th-minute cross to once again claim the FA Cup for Arsene Wenger’s team, the joy in his celebration said it all.

Ramsey has been one of the players who has taken plenty of grief for a season of Premier League underachievement at the Emirates.

Troy Deeney even accused him of faking injury when Watford inflicted a painful defeat on Wenger’s men.

But when it mattered most – after Arsenal had suffered the shock of Diego Costa volleying Antonio Conte’s 10-man champions level – there he was scoring the goal that gave those same supporters joy.

Back in 2014, at the same end of Wembley, Ramsey scored the extratime winner as the Gunners recovered from two goals down to beat Hull.

Perhaps, Arsenal’s fans should think twice before getting on his back next time his standards slip.

Chelsea were reduced in numbers when Victor Moses was sent off for trying to con a penalty out of referee Anthony Taylor when they were trailing to Alexis Sanchez’s early opener.

But they showed real character to level through Costa.

However, just three minutes later, Ramsey was once again Arsenal’s Wembley hero.

It was a bitterly disappointing end to the season for Conte.

But at times, Chelsea looked like they had been on a two-week bender since clinching the title – and that enabled Arsenal to play the kind of champagne football their fans demand.

This was Arsenal’s best performance since the number they did on Chelsea at the Emirates in September promoted Conte to have a tactical rethink that turned into a title-winning masterstroke. After a minute’s silence for the victims of the Manchester bomb had been impeccably observed, Arsenal should have been out of sight by the break.

Yes, Sanchez was fortunate to get the benefit of offside and handball decisions before ramming the Gunners into a fourth-minute lead.

Sanchez started and finished the move for his 30th goal of the season.

Ramsey was standing in an offside position when the Chilean’s attempt to find him with a clipped pass was cut out by the head of David Luiz.

And Ramsey was still beyond the last man when N’golo Kante tried to complete the clearance only for Sanchez to charge the ball down and ease the ball low past Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea didn’t know whether to appeal for offside or handball. They had valid cases for both. Assistant referee Gary Beswick raised his flag, but the referee consulted him before awarding the goal.

Injuries to Shkodran Mustafi and Gabriel, as well as Laurent Koscielny’s suspension, forced Wenger to ask the ageing Per Mertesacker and Rob Holding to keep the champions at bay. Mertesacker, given the captain’s armband for his first start in more than a year, was a rock when Chelsea launched a second-half rally. And Holding was just as impressive. But, by then, it should have been game over. Mesut Ozil should have scored when Sanchez sent him clear, but the German took a slightly heavy first touch and when he managed to clip a clever finish over the sprawling Courtois, there was Gary Cahill to backheel off the line. Danny Welbeck’s header hit the post and Ramsey’s chested follow-up struck the same upright. Conte’s men were a a different beast on the restart. David Ospina was fortunate that a deflection on Kante’s shot

took the ball straight to him. And Mertesacker’s brilliant intervention thwarted Costa.

Moses, booked for a 56th-minute foul on Welbeck, tumbled theatrically over Alex Oxlade-chamberlain’s challenge as he cut into the box and was given a second yellow, followed by the red.

Yet, amazingly, the Blues were level 14 minutes from time.

Substitute Willian fed a lofted cross into the box and Costa scuffed a deflected volley that carried too much power for Ospina.

Chelsea’s fans were still celebrating when Ramsey (left) struck.

Giroud span and fed a cross that the Welshman stooped to head home.

Even then, it took at brilliant save by Ospina to prevent Costa from levelling.

And Ozil wasted the chance to kill off the game when he struck the post with a chance he should have taken.
