FIRMINO: TITLE RACE WIDE OPEN

- BY CHRIS HATHERALL

ROBERTO FIRMINO insists there is no ‘super team’ in this year’s title race – and that gives Liverpool a real chance of finishing top.

The Brazilian (right) helped the Reds to fourth last year, scoring 12 goals. Now he says Jurgen Klopp’s men are aiming even higher after a strong start to the season.

The Reds have already taken four points from the opening two games and clinched a place in the group stages of the Champions League.

Firmino said: “We are feeling good and what we want to achieve is pretty clear. We must at least repeat our performance of last year by finishing in the top four – and then fight for the title.

“The team is also very motivated by the experience of being back in the Champions League. The target is to finish in the best possible position and we are aiming high.”

Liverpool haven’t won a league title since 1990 – before the Premier League was even formed.

But Firmino insists there is now real hope of the drought being ended.

He said: “I think we have a chance because the Premier League is a very open competition this year.

“For me there doesn’t exist an out-and-out favourite. That’s what makes the season exciting. All the squads have improved but there isn’t one single ‘super team’. Everybody will believe they have a chance. “The key for us is to win our games at Anfield and make it an impossible place for rivals to visit.

“But you can see it will be a closer title race than in the past. So we need to take our opportunity.”
