On a rain-hit qualifying session at Monza, it was the Brit who reigned supreme.

The Mercedes driver, who equalled Schumacher’s all-time record last weekend in Belgium, was more than a second quicker than closest rival Max Verstappen in treacherous conditions.

“It’s great to break this record at such a historic circuit and in such a beautiful country,” Hamilton (right) told the crowd.

“I am going to have some pasta tonight to celebrate.”

The much-delayed session was one of the longest on record, ending with late drama some three-and-half hours after it started.

Hamilton, who is seven points behind leader Sebastian Vettel and can take the overall lead today, occupied himself during the delay by engaging with fans on social media and playing video games.

He then got back in the car and did it for real, securing his 69th career pole position.

He said: “I came across the line and I didn’t know if I had it but it felt a good lap. Sixty nine. I can’t believe it.

“It is very hard to find the words to explain how I feel. I am still trying to figure it all out.

“The weather has been incredibly tricky for us all. To come here to this beautiful country and face typically English weather was a massive challenge.”

Hamilton, who punched the air as he crossed the line, added: “I gave it everything with that last lap and it probably won’t sink in for a long time.”

While Hamilton enjoyed his historic moment, title rival * Vettel was left frustrated at a lack of power, finishing eighth.

He will start from sixth after grid penalties for the two Red Bulls but it left the passionate Ferrari fans crestfallen at the prospect of another difficult weekend at their home circuit.

Vettel said: “I don’t know what the problem was. I was surprised by how quick the others went, we couldn’t match them.

“Tomorrow we can make up a lot of ground and you can overtake here.”

The penalties for Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo will promote Williams’ Canadian rookie teenager Lance Stroll to a stunning front-row slot.

In another eye-catching performance from a hectic session, France’s Esteban Ocon will start third for Force India alongside Hamilton’s Finnish team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

It was the fourth year in a row that the Briton has taken pole at Monza, the fastest circuit on the calendar.

Mercedes’ non-executive chairman Niki Lauda beamed: “I have no words. Lewis’ lap was unbelievable.”
