Riots break out after cop is cleared of killing black man
POLICE fired rubber bullets at rioters yesterday after a white officer was acquitted of murdering a black suspect in St Louis, US.
An angry mob smashed windows and hurled bricks at officers. The mayor’s home was also targeted with rocks and paint. Ten police were injured and 23 people arrested.
Tensions flared on Friday after a judge found ex-officer Jason Stockley, 36, not guilty of the murder of Anthony Lamar Smith, 24. A protest march started peacefully as about 600 people chanted: “No justice, no peace.” But some stayed on the streets and violence erupted overnight. Alleged drug dealer Smith was shot five times in his car as he tried to flee in 2011. U2 were forced to cancel their concert in St. Louis last night because police could not provide enough officers to keep crowds safe.
