QWhy can’t bearded dragons eat citrus? I’ve heard it upsets their stomachs but why are they so sensitive to the fruit? I have a bearded dragon and want to make sure it stays well fed, but healthy.

Maggie Rushton, Hull Fruit in general is very high in sugar and should only be fed as the occasional treat. Unfortunately obesity in beardies is common and can have life-threatening consequences. Too much sugar also disrupts the normal bacteria in the gut and can cause a yeast overgrowth. A bearded dragon’s diet should consist of a variety of insects and vegetables. As they get older, they need less insects and more vegetables, which can include homegrown grasses and weeds.
