GROVES READY FOR PRE-BOUT SEX KNOCKOUT

- BY TOM HOPKINSON

GEORGE GROVES is ready to follow Carl Froch’s lead and introduce a sex ban in the build-up to his fights.

And the WBA ‘super’ world super-middleweight champion admits his wife will be more than happy to support him.

Former world champ Froch, who twice beat Groves, used to abstain from nookie for the entire three months of his training camps.

Groves, who takes on Jamie Cox at Wembley Arena on Saturday in the first round of the World Boxing Super Series tournament, said: “It’s not a bad idea. I’m 30 next year and Carl’s best years were well into his 30s, so if it worked for him…

“The missus is happy to go on strike with me for a while.”

Despite the plan, Groves will sleep in his own bed during this camp, up until the night before the fight – providing young son Teddy doesn’t kick him out.

But that is just how he likes it. Now he has finally landed his world title after beating Fedor Chudinov last May, Groves believes there is a vacancy to become the star name in the supermiddleweight division.

He added: “Once Andre Ward moved up out of the supermiddleweight division there was no real superstar in it, including myself, and at the end of this tournament I will be able to say I’m one of the pound-for-pound best out there.

“If I need a couple more fights to get into that pound-for-pound list I’m capable of it, and that will be the final goal, to get pound-for-pound top five, top 10.

“A tournament will help me on the way. That’s what happened to Ward – he came out of one a top pound-forpound fighter.

“I was running around a few years ago telling everyone that everything happens for a reason and this tournament has come around for me at the right time.

“There are three fights and I have to win it.

“I will beat everyone so it’s about staying focused, motivated, healthy and going out and getting the job done.”

Groves admits he is still haunted by his fight with Eduard Gutknecht last November, a clash which left the German with a bleed on the brain that has left it “almost completely damaged”, according to the fighter’s wife.

He added: “Gutknecht comes into my mind frequently.

“It does make me reassess things. Not just me but my mum and dad, wife, close friends and family.

“But it is what it is. I still want to box and until that changes, that’s what I’ll be doing.”
