Calamity Koeman on borrowed time

-

BELEAGUERED Everton boss Ronald Koeman’s £300million-plus squad is worth more than those of Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund and Serie A table-toppers Napoli.

The value of the Goodison squad also tops Spanish high-fliers Sevilla, Valencia and Atletico Madrid, sitting second, third and fourth in La Liga. But £6m-a-year Koeman, backed by the biggest transfer budget in Everton’s history, isn’t delivering value for money to owner Farhad Moshiri (right) this season.

With the 12th-mostexpensive squad in Europe, Everton should waltz into the Premier League’s top six and challenge in the Europa League. But it just isn’t happening for Koeman.

He showed genuine long-term ambition with the Jordan Pickford and Michael Keane captures, but some other transfer thinking was flawed.

The celebrity signing of Wayne Rooney has provided little aside from a raft of unwanted, boozy headlines, while the failure to replace Romelu Lukaku’s goals is a gaffe-of-the-season contender.

The Blues sit only two places above the drop zone and Europa League results have been abysmal too.

They were thumped 3-0 at mid-table Serie A outfit Atalanta and were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Apollon Limassol.

The public claims from Koeman (left) that his players are “scared” was far from motivational.

The Burnley home defeat that followed seemed to confirm his words were ill-chosen.

Despite a vote of confidence from Moshiri, defeat at promoted Brighton next week could seal Koeman’s fate.

If he survives, next up in the league would be Arsenal at home and Leicester away.

There is also a League Cup tie at Chelsea and a Europa Cup doubleheader with Lyon.

Koeman needs to spark a quick and dramatic turnaround from his squad.
