JAMIE SHOT DEAD AS HE TRIED TO SAVE HIS PALS

Victim, 24, told friends to run before brutal killer blasted him in head

- BY CILLIAN O’BRIEN

A MAN gunned down in Dublin early yesterday shouted at pals to “run” as his killer approached.

Gardai appealed for witnesses after known criminal Jamie Tighe Ennis, 24, was blasted in the head in Coolock as he returned from a night out. A source said: “His main problem was he was trying to be a big fella.”

A YOUNG man was shot three times yesterday – seconds after he had told his pals to run for it.

Jamie Tighe Ennis was returning from a night out when he was murdered in the early hours.

It is understood the victim, who was known to gardai, shouted “run” to his friends as the gunman approached.

The 24-year-old, from Timbermills apartments in Artane, North Dublin, was blasted in the head at around 2.25am and died at the scene.

Ennis was part of a group walking at Moatview Avenue in Coolock when he was gunned down in a suspected gangrelated attack

A local told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “He said ‘run’ to his friends and they ran and dived into gardens.”

A black Audi A3, registration 00-OY5067, is thought to have been used in the shooting.

It was found a short time later burnt out in a green between the Griffith and Prospect Hill areas of Finglas, near Clearwater Shopping Centre.

The killing is not believed to be related to the Kinahan-hutch feud, although it is understood Ennis had links to both sides.

A source said he was hit with a number of bullets. The victim was known to gardai for his involvement in crime. He had a number of convictions including for assaults on gardai and possession of firearms.

It has also been claimed he had links with drugs and robbery and was a suspect in a number of shootings in the past year.

Gardai are trying to establish a motive but are satisfied it is linked to the victim’s involvement in crime.

The source added: “He wasn’t affiliated to any major criminal gangs but he would have been associated with gangs from the North Strand and East Wall.

“His main problem was he was trying to be a big fella.

“He might have had some other links to the Kinahan-hutch feud but this was not linked to it.

“He had been drinking most of the day and it looks like he was followed or watched.”

At a press conference at Coolock Garda station, Supt Gerard Donnelly said it was too early to determine how many shooters approached the victim.

He urged any witnesses who may have seen the car used in the fatal attack to contact them.

Supt Donnelly added: “I wish to make an appeal on a number of fronts.

“Firstly to anyone who may have witnessed the shooting on Moatview Avenue, for anybody who may have observed the black Audi A3 prior to the shooting or subsequent to the shooting, particularly while it was en route from the Coolock/clonshaugh area towards Finglas. “I’m aware the deceased was in the company of a number of people, both male and female, at the time of the shooting so I would ask for those people to please make contact with us.

“I’m also appealing for anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious in the Moatview Avenue area to please make contact.

“A full technical examination is ongoing at the scene and the body has been removed and is at the city mortuary in Whitehall, where a postmortem will be carried out by assistant state pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.”

Anyone who was near Martin’s Pub in Priorswood between 2am and 2.30am is also asked to get in touch with the Garda. A woman in streams of tears approached the scene yesterday morning to leave a bouquet of flowers.

A local told the Irish Mirror: “JT was big into the gym and drinking, like any 24-year-old. He didn’t deserve that.”

Family and friends have also taken to social media to share tributes.

One post read: “Rest in peace Jamie. We were only buzzing with you yesterday I can’t believe it. Rest in peace fly high Jamie Tighe.”

Another wrote: “Honestly, I can’t believe it, this place is just getting worse. RIP, still in shock, thinking of his family.”
