BLACK POWER
Actresses to protest in style
FORGET burning bras – for 2018 actresses are turning the classic wardrobe staple into a political symbol of strength and solidarity. Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone and Nicole Kidman will be among stars fighting back in black at tonight’s Golden Globe Awards.
In the wake of sexual assault allegations against powerful Hollywood players last year, more than 30 actresses vowed to use the red carpet to raise awareness about abuse and harassment.
Saoirse, 23, from Carlow, who picked up the Best Actress honour at the 2018 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards this week for her role in Lady Bird this week, admitted she will be wearing all-black in solidarity.
She said: “It is the most important thing and I’ve never felt so encouraged and inspired and supported to use whatever voice I have.
“I think it’s invaluable and paramount that this happens now.”
Ronan, a lead actress Globe nominee, added: “I’m bringing one of my best friends with me and she’ll be wearing black also. The relationships between women are so strong when you have them and it’s about time that we get to experience that in our industry, too, you know?” The campaign has been spearheaded by Time’s Up, an initiative designed to counter systemic sexual harassment in Hollywood, and is supported by other big names including Eva Longoria, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Since news broke of the initiative hitting the Globes, Hollywood stylists have been battling to bag the best black gowns for their star clients and we can’t wait to see the gowns. If there’s one thing for sure, the the black dress is a timeless must-have for every woman’s wardrobe. To celebrate the Globes’ bold move and to stand with our Hollywood sisters, we’ve rounded up our Top 10 favourite black dresses on the high street for a January blues busting €50 and under. demelza.deburca@trinitymirror.com
