Moyes is Evra so thankful

- BY SIMON MULLOCK

DAVID MOYES had no doubts about giving Patrice Evra a Premier League lifeline at West Ham.

It’s because the former France star was one of the few Manchester United players to console him when he was axed in 2014.

There were some raised eyebrows when the Hammers gave Evra a contract until the end of the season last week as it was assumed there was lingering bad blood between Moyes and the 36-year-old defender from their time working together at Old Trafford.

But Sunday Mirror Sport understands that an infamous airport bust-up over Evra eating a bacon sandwich against his manager’s wishes was never going to prevent Moyes from approaching the left-back following his controversial exit from Marseille.

Evra’s contract was terminated by the French club in November after he felled a fan with a kung-fu kick before a Europa League tie.

But Moyes (right) felt that Evra gave him his full commitment throughout his ill-fated 10-month spell in charge at Old Trafford.

And Evra was one of the first players to call the Scot to offer words of comfort when he was dismissed.

A source said: “When David left United, he was contacted by a few of the players. One of those was Patrice, who made it clear that he was sad to see him go and that maybe a few of the senior players at United had let the manager down.

“David appreciated Patrice’s words – and they parted on good terms.

“When Evra became available, David knew that he was signing a player he could rely on.”

Evra had a stellar career at Old Trafford, winning the Champions League and five Premier League titles in nine seasons.
